Dermabrasion

Home : Facial Rejuvenation : Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion (or sanding of the skin) is the mechanical removal of the outer layers of skin achieved by a rapidly rotating cylinder or dome covered with diamond chips or wires. Dermabrasion is used to smooth scars and reduce surface irregularities that result from acne and other skin conditions. Irregular scars can often be improved (but not erased) by sanding, equalizing the margins, and eliminating some of the elevations. Vertical wrinkles of the lip causing "lipstick bleed" can also be improved by dermabrasion.

The goal in treating irregular surfaces is to sand down the high points or elevations so that the low ones (acne depressions, wrinkles) appear less deep. As the wound heals after dermabrasion, a new layer of epidermis (skin) forms over the raw dermal surface.

From Left to Right: Illustration 1: Dermabrasion and dermaplaning can smooth scars left by acne, accidents, or previous surgery, as well as fine facial wrinkles, especially those around the mouth. Illustration 2: In dermabrasion, the surgeon scrapes away the top layers of skin using an electrically operated instrument with a rough wire brush or diamond-impregnated burr. Illustration 3: This cross section shows how dermabrasion smooths irregularities in the outermost layer of skin.

From Left to Right: Illustration 1: Dermaplaning uses a dermatone to skim off surface layers of skin that surround facial defects. Illustration 2:  Several months after your procedure, pigmentation returns and the skin is much smoother than before.

Years ago, deep dermabrasions often resulted in unnatural pigmentary delineation between the face and neck. To avoid this, lighter, more frequent dermabrasions are done. In addition, most patients undergo a preconditioning program using advanced skin care products (such as the Obagi Nu-Derm System) to promote more rapid healing, and fewer pigmentary problems. In addition, a light Obagi Blue Peel of the neck will result in more even coloration.

Some form of anesthetic is required, such as local anesthesia and/or sedation.

Procedure at a Glance

Procedure: Mechanical scraping of the top layers of skin using a high-speed rotary wheel, allowing new skin to form from the underlying dermis; therefore, creating a new surface of skin (resurfacing). Softens sharp edges of surface irregularities, including acne and other scars and fine wrinkles, especially around the mouth. This results in a fresher and healthier appearance.

Anesthesia: Local anesthesia with mild sedation.

Length of Surgery: About 1/2 to 1 hour. Usually done as an outpatient procedure.

Post-op Discomfort: Minimal to moderate for smaller areas. Moderate to severe (at times) for 1 to 2 days for more extensive areas.

Post-op Recovery: Approximately 5-12 days to heal. Redness for a few months, then pink. Our Esthetician will work with you to restore your appearance as rapidly as possible. Make-up can be applied after healing.

Risks: Please read your permit carefully and ask us to explain anything you do not understand.

Return to Activities: Normal work schedule and other activities can be resumed after 1 to 2 weeks.

Duration of Results: Effects of a dermabrasion are long lasting. For best results, use of physician strength advanced skincare products will continue to slough off dead skin cells and rejuvenate the skin when used on a daily basis.
