Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)

Home : Cosmetic Plastic Surgery : Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)

Abdominoplasty, known more commonly as a 'tummy tuck' is a major surgical procedure to remove excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen and to tighten the muscles of the abdominal wall. The procedure can dramatically reduce the appearance of a protruding abdomen caused by multiple pregnancies or loss of elasticity in older patents with slight obesity.

Abdominoplasty, whether partial or complete, produces excellent results for patients with weakened abdominal muscles or excess skin. In most cases, the results are long lasting, if you follow a balanced diet and exercise regularly.

From Left to Right: Illustration 1: Generally, a horizontal incision is placed just within or above the pubic area. If there is loose skin above the navel, the surgeon may make a second incision around the navel. Skin in the shaded area is separated from the abdominal wall. . Illustration 2: To tighten the abdominal wall, the surgeon brings loose underlying tissue and muscle together with sutures. Illustration 3: Abdominal skin is pulled downward, and the excess is removed. A small opening is made to bring the navel through.

The best candidates for a Tummy Tuck

The best candidates for abdominoplasty are men or women who are in relatively good shape but are bothered by weak abdominal muscles, a large fat deposit or loose abdominal skin that won't respond to diet or exercise. Patients who intend to lose a lot of weight should postpone the surgery.

For thousands of men and women the procedure has resulted in a flatter, trimmer abdomen that makes them more comfortable and gives them more confidence.
