Breast reductions are performed for both medical and cosmetic reasons. Women with very large, pendulous breasts may experience a variety of medical problems including neck and back pain, bra straps cutting into the shoulders, shooting pains into the fingers, moisture and rashes under the breast, and difficulties with exercise. Large breasted women often feel self-conscious frequently starting during their teenage years.

The nipple and areola remain attached to the underlying tissue but are shifted to a higher position. The size of the areola is often reduced at the same time. In addition, the areola (dark skin surrounding the nipple) is often reduced in size. The procedure does leave noticeable, permanent scars, although they'll be covered by your bra or bathing suit. Fortunately, the scars can usually be placed so that you can wear even low-cut tops. Often, patients who maintain extra weight to conceal the breasts, lose this weight after the surgery.
