Breast Reduction
Home : Cosmetic Plastic Surgery : Breast Reduction
Breast reductions are performed for both medical and cosmetic reasons. Women with very large, pendulous breasts may experience a variety of medical problems including neck and back pain, bra straps cutting into the shoulders, shooting pains into the fingers, moisture and rashes under the breast, and difficulties with exercise. Large breasted women often feel self-conscious frequently starting during their teenage years.

Illustrations from left to right: Illustration 1: One common breast reduction technique removes excess breast tissue, fat and skin through the incisions shown. The nipple and areola remain attached to the underlying tissue but are shifted to a higher position. The size of the areola is often reduced at the same time. Illustration 2 Skin that formerly was located above the nipple is brought down and together to reshape the breast.

The procedure removes fat, glandular tissue, and skin from the breasts, making them smaller, lighter, and firmer. In addition, the areola (dark skin surrounding the nipple) is often reduced in size.
The procedure does leave noticeable, permanent scars, although they'll be covered by your bra or bathing suit. Fortunately, the scars can usually be placed so that you can wear even low-cut tops. Often, patients who maintain extra weight to conceal the breasts, lose this weight after the surgery. Medical symptoms experienced before surgery can be relieved while the body will look better proportioned.
The best candidates for Breast Reduction
The best candidates are those who are mature enough to fully understand the procedure and have realistic expectations about the results.
